Dan Mc Clanahan Commercial Portraits Using 5 Lights and Gels
In February 2025, Dan McClanahan brought his signature energy and precision to San Diego, presenting a dynamic workshop on creating high-impact, commercial-style portraits using a five-light setup and bold color gels. Known for blending technical mastery with artistic vision, Dan walked attendees through the strategic layering of each light, beginning with a strong key and progressively building rim, background, and fill lights to sculpt the subject with intention. His use of colored gels brought a modern, editorial edge to the images—transforming ordinary settings into eye-catching, commercial-grade work. A few standout takeaways: build your lighting one step at a time to troubleshoot and finesse each element; don’t underestimate the power of subtle fill to control mood; and embrace color as a storytelling tool, not just an effect. Dan’s workshop emphasized that great lighting is less about gear and more about purposeful decisions.
This great event took place at the Hotel Del Coronado Resort on Coronado Island.
